Narcissism 2001

They are trying to change you to their way of thinking.

Terrorism is nothing new. For hundreds of years terrorist attacks have been perpetuated in different countries. World War One was started by the assassination of the arch duke of Austria and his wife by a terrorist - that war saw millions of people killed. Countless other wars and conflicts have been punctuated by terrorists attacks. In Europe both home grown and foreign organizations have bombed, kidnapped, held hostage and killed hundreds if not thousands of people since the end of the last world war.

Other than the home grown terrorist attack on the federal building in Oklahoma City, no large scale terrorist attack has been recorded on American soil until 2001 (The first attack failed on the world trade center, when the same people put a truck bomb in the basement). It was meant to have a massive impact on the American psyche, and it succeeded. It was hoped that it would destroy a democratic way of life - the jury is still out on that outcome.

One of the weapons used by Narcissists to manipulate people is fear. Deception and lies are other tools. Brute force that harms or kills is also used to scare people. If they are applied in the most effective manner, they will make the victim believe that the world has changed and that what the Narcissists believes is true. Mass psychosis results from changing how people perceive reality. The victims no longer feel safe, their adrenaline glands produce hormones that pump up their fight or flight reactions. Once victims are overcome with emotional reactions they can no longer think straight.

President Roosevelt understood this when he said, "Only thing we have to fear is fear itself" speaking of the economic depression. During the dark years of the war, the president showed incredible courage and resolve, all the while battling a crippling disease. The world was a different place back then, more isolated, perhaps friendlier and closely connected. Self sacrifice and duty were words that held true meaning. Hardship and economic problems had strengthened the American people. American values meant something. Perhaps people were naive but they were willing to fight for the truth.

Today we live in a society of abundance and wealth, in America, while we pursue a life of self indulgence and grandiosity in both private and public life. Our government and politicians mirror the population's narcissism. Where this will lead us is still unknown. Often I think of the Titanic as a metaphor of our modern society. Perhaps we should look to the ancient inhabitants of Eastern Island who also lived in an abundant time, and who devoted all their energies and resources (cutting down their trees) to building large stone heads to reflected their narcissistic glory. What happened to them?

Do I have any advice? Like Oprah Winfrey, I could tell you to wake up and smell the coffee, but instead I put up this site in the hope that it might bring some enlightenment into your life.
